The Olsen effect
I am attempting the Olsen effect.
If your Pinterest dashboard is anything like mine, the Olsen twin are all over it. The sisters’ style is currently trending and if we’re being honest I am a fan. It’s not only their style that gets me going it’s also their emphasis on privacy that amazes me. They’re so serious about a private life that it transcends into their brand, The Row.
Aside from privacy and amazing sense of fashion, the Olsen twin have this unique loyalty trait that we don’t often see with celebrities. What do I mean? Well, take a look on their bags for example, used and worn down. When you think of Birkin bags, we often think back to status symbols, we know people take better care of their bags than they do themselves sometimes. Mary Kate on the other hand USES her Birkin. There are multiple photos online of her wearing that bag. The obvious stains and color fade proves that this bag is not a closet trophy. That’s my goal.
I really want to start my journey of underconsumption. I’ve said this so many times and never started. This time, I’m serious. I believe my time away from Instagram has really influenced me to attempt this and be consistent with not buying something new. I honestly believe that social media is a drug and each of us gets a different high. For me it’s wanting a new bag, new wallet, new makeup, knowing I don’t need any of those things. Taking a break from socials only revealed to me that I have fell victim to overconsumption and I want to cut that out.
If you’re a Darling, you would know I’ve just purchased one of my dream vintage bags, the Chanel Accordion Hobo bag. Did I need it? No but I wanted it because collection purses is a passion for me. During this season of not being online, I’m going to make it my duty to not purchase another bag for the rest of the year. To help with The Olsen Effect, I’m going to create a purse rotation for Fall and consistently use those bags all season long. Along with my bag rotation, I’m going to attempt to only use one wallet. When I begin to see the wear and tear of my bags I’ll know I’m on the right track. With this, I have to remind myself not to crash out of find a stain or tear somewhere because that’s the point! I’ll be getting my money’s worth out of the bag and I will be overcoming overconsumption!
I’m excited for this!
Darling Question of the Day — What is something in your closet that you find yourself wearing over and over?
With love, Dani.
